Standing up against GBV, as a youngster

Savannah Taylor, 17, is using her pageantry career to support the fight against gender-based violence.

With passion in her heart and an abundance of empathy for the struggles of others, the young Krugersdorp High School (KHS) learner and Miss Regal International Teen SA finalist Savannah Taylor wants to use her platform to fight the scourge that is the national gender-based violence problem.

During her journey to the top of the pageantry world, Savannah developed a sense of duty towards the People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA) organisation which aims to create a safe and equal society for all women.

According to POWA they provide those in need with frontline services (shelters, counselling and legal advice), women-centred legal services, outreach actions, training and development, and conduct feminist research and knowledge production.

Savannah joined the exhibitors at the Kenmare Artisan and Design Expo from September 17 to 19 to chat with visitors about GBV and the work being done by POWA.

“I want to use my platform to let people know that there is a place they can go to for help. I try to spread awareness in every way I can.”

A confident Savannah spoke to a gathering crowd about the toll that violence was taking on the community and society at large, explaining how organisations such as POWA could help.

Savannah is also organising a charity event called the Power to POWA walk at Segwati Getaways in Hartebeesthoek in support of the organisation. Starting at 08:30 Savannah and other participants will set off on a five to ten kilometre walk through nature. The entry fee of R100 for adults and R50 per child/ pensioner and any other funds raised will be donated to POWA.

Savannah explained that at every 1km mark there will be information about POWA and GBV, and asked that if anyone wishes to support the walk to contact Sharon Taylor on 082 412 9823.
