Water supply woes in parts of town: Municipality comments

The municipality said they were working on restoring water to parts of Mogale City and had in the meantime deployed water tankers. The community believes this might be too little too late.

The Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has released a statement saying they are aware that parts of Krugersdorp North, Munsieville and Quellerie Park are without water.

“This is due to a burst 450mm pipe at the corner of Viljoen and Van Riebeeck Streets that was repaired on Wednesday night (July 28).”

The statement said although repairs were successful, the pipe could not be kept steady because the soil was waterlogged where the repairs were done.

Dry soil was ordered that same night and delivered on site Thursday morning (July 29).”

A team is currently backfilling the trench with dry soil, which will be followed by trench compaction to stabilise the ground.

MCLM said water supply is expected to be restored at 10:30, and roving water tankers have been made available at the following locations:
• Munsieville Reservoir close to Usave
• Dan Pienaarville Reservoir
• Krugersdorp North Spar
• Rant-en-Dal Spar

“We apologise for the inconvenience that this interruption has caused to residents and businesses operating in the affected areas.”

But residents and AfriForum say this communication is too little too late. The News has been inundated with calls from residents saying that the issue is not a new one.

Residents are fed up and excuses are made every week for failing water pipes. Surely there should have been maintenance on these types of structures over the last 26 years?” Sandra Louw said.

Martin Lombard from AfriForum added they would be taking the matter further and requesting a full infrastructure audit on Mogale City’s water resources.

He said water is a basic human right, and in the past days ward councillors and residents have been getting radio silence about the issues with the water in the area, and when it will be fixed.

“AfriForum will take this fight forward,” he concluded.
