On the Chinese calendar, 2021 is the Year of the Ox.

According to the website China Highlights, ‘the ox occupies the second position in the Chinese Zodiac.

The Year of the Ox was also celebrated in 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009 and occurs every 12 years.

It names five types of oxen, each with different characteristics:

• Wood Ox (born in 1925 and 1985) – restless, decisive, straightforward, and always ready to defend the weak and helpless
• Fire Ox (born in 1937 and 1997) – short-sighted, selfish, narrow-minded, impersonal, but practical
• Earth Ox (born in 1949 and 2009) – honest and prudent, with a strong sense of responsibility
• Gold Ox (born in 1961 and 2021) – hardworking, active, always busy, and popular among friends
• Water Ox (born in 1913 and 1973) – hardworking, ambitious, tenacious, and able to endure hardship, with strong sense of justice and keen observational abilities

Famous Ox Year people’ include Vincent van Gogh, Adolf Hitler, Walt Disney, Margaret Thatcher and Barack Obama.

So-called lucky Ox colours are blue, yellow, green. ‘Lucky numbers’ are 1, 4, and numbers containing 1 and 4 (like 14 and 41), while ‘unlucky numbers’ are 5 and 6.
