Woman surprises former boyfriend in bar: Robs him at knifepoint

Gender-based violence victims are not necessarily women, said police after a woman robbed her ex-boyfriend at knifepoint.

“The common belief about gender-based violence is that in most instances the victims are women. It is not the case and is actually another form of social pandemic that has no boundaries, race and colour, just like other viruses,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police’s spokesperson.

He explained this statement by saying that on 14 October their police members had to escort the victim of an armed robbery to his ex-girlfriend’s home after she allegedly robbed him at knifepoint.

Sibiya said the victim went to a tavern in Extension 14 earlier to meet his new girlfriend.

As he entered the tavern, he noticed his ex-girlfriend sitting inside. When he offered to buy her a drink, the woman instead just stared at him,” Sibiya said.

The woman then stood up and took out a knife before charging the victim and taking his cellphone from him forcefully.

“She then walked out of the tavern holding the victim’s cellphone. The victim followed her and tried to beg for his cellphone.”

Sibiya explained that when the victim realised the woman had no intention of returning his cellphone to him, he went to the Kagiso Police Station to report the incident.

Police then escorted the man to the suspect’s home but the woman still refused to return the cellphone. She was then arrested and detained at the Kagiso Police Station.

A case docket of armed robbery was opened against the 30-year-old suspect. She will appear briefly in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court soon.”
