Standing up for the women in their lives

A group of friends recently organised a march against gender-based violence in Kagiso as a way of raising awareness and keeping their family and friends safe.

Violence is a sad reality and in recent weeks women around the country have been standing up against domestic and gender-based violence.

On Saturday, 10 October, a group of young men from Kagiso joined the fight. They organised a march and took their concerns to the Kagiso Police Station.

Katlego Molefe led the march.

Katlego Molefe, one of the organisers of the march explained that their group of friends saw the video of a young girl from Kagiso talking about when she was abducted and almost human-trafficked before she could escape.

“We saw the video and were shocked. During lockdown the focus has also been on gender-based violence and we decided we needed to do something,” Katlego said.

A simple message, stop gender-based violence.

Armed with posters and their voices they joined others in standing up for their sisters, their mothers, their aunts, their cousins, their friends and all other women in their community.

We need more community patrols in our areas, especially during the hours that learners go to and come from school,” Katlego said as he explained that girls are being targeted between their homes and schools and the shops.

Obakeng Kunene holds a poster with a simple but valuable message.

The group of men declared that the only way to kill the silence is to speak out and be heard, and that is exactly what they did.
