Eskom’s latest West Rand Power Distributions statement corrects misinterpretation by the media

"We are concerned about various media reports which state that customers in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Riverlea will be affected by the planned disconnection. This has caused panic from customers in these areas."

Eskom has posted a statement correcting false information published by multiple media houses, caused by a misinterpretation of an Eskom notice released on 23 January.

The media houses in question noted that Krugersdorp, Roodepoort, Randfontein and other areas will be affected during a proposed shutdown of areas operating under West Rand Power Distributors.

The Krugersdorp News confirmed with local DA Caucus Leader before publishing the initial Eskom release that only a small area outside of Krugersdorp, namely West Village, will be affected. Westrand Power Distributors, in fact, have no connection with Mogale City Local Municipality, and their debt does not affect the Mogale City areas. Furthermore, Roodepoort falls under Joburg City Power and Randfontein falls under Rand West Local Municipality. None of these are affiliated to West Rand Power Distributors.

West Village power shutdown not a concern for Krugersdorp

Daphne Mokwena, Senior Manager for Customer Services in the Gauteng Operating unit of Eskom noted in the statement, “We are concerned about various media reports which state that customers in Randfontein, Krugersdorp and Riverlea will be affected by the planned disconnection. This has caused panic from customers in these areas”.
The statement also noted that, “Eskom’s intention to disconnect supply to West Rand Power Distributors for the R18 786 593.07 it owes the utility, will not affect thousands of customers as reported by the media”.

West Rand Power Distributors have contacted the Krugersdorp News and noted that they will be sending a press release before the end of today, 24 January.
