[2019 RECAP] May to August saw some great sporting headlines

The middle of the year saw some impressive sporting headlines, with records being broken and locals making names for themselves on international level.

There were some awesome sporting highlights during the middle of 2019.

Let’s recap what happened in May to August:

May:

• Krugersdorp High School hosted its Best of the West sports days. Schools from as far as Zimbabwe participated in rugby, boys hockey, hockey and netball.

• The new Action Sports Centre at Key West Shopping Centre hosted its very first soccer clinic. The boys from Tsholetshega Primary were taught new techniques on ball handling and field movement.

• The 52-year-old Mark van Biljon won the trophy in the over-50 Bodybuilding Category at the 2019 Arnold Classic Challenge. News journalist Jaco Human sat down with him to find out what kept him so fit, healthy and looking young.

June:

• The News team took part in one of their Caxton Care initiatives and in the early morning hours of 19 June, they prepared to hand out water to the cyclists taking part in Ebenhaezer House’s annual cycle challenge – The Bell of Hope Cycle Challenge. The challenge is hosted to raise money for the organisation that houses and looks after mentally ill adults.

• The Panthers, otherwise known as the Noordheuwel Country Club’s netball division, hosted 14 other netball teams for a fun-filled day of netball.

• ‘n Kleuterskooljuffrou het bewys dat jy enige iets kan doen as jy net hard werk. Sy het by die Arnold Classic Africa-kompetisie ‘n vierde plek verower.

• Two riders from the Brexton Park Equestrian Stables in Muldersdrift received their Gauteng Dressage team colours at the Dressage South Africa challenge. Cheyenne Meyer-Palmer finished as the second highest qualifier in the Gauteng Pony Riders Novice team, and Katarina Stamenic was the highest qualifier in the Gauteng Junior prelim section.

July:

• The Gauteng Regional Motocross Championships were hosted at the Dirt Bronco track. Riders in 12 different classes competed in the mud and dirt.

• It was Comrades time again and Mary Kourie from Krugersdorp did exceptionally well. She ran the Comrades in six hours and 55 minutes, and finished 10th overall among the women.

• The Day of Reckoning arrived in Kagiso when this big boxing tournament was hosted at the Kagiso Memorial and recreational centre.

• The Cool Runners, who functions under the Noordheuwel Country club, invited all runners to join them. From young to old, experienced and novice all are welcome to join the club. Contact Warren Mackenzie on 084 498 0943.

August:

• Die 13-jarige Heinrich Wasserfall is gekies om saam met die Suid-Afrikaanse Laerskole Tennisspan na die Abrie du Plooy-tennisakademie in New Orleans te toer.

• Just under 900 junior hockey players competed against each other in a hockey tournament hosted by the Khosa Club.

• Kyle Ripley and René Koen, or Black Widow as she is known in the wrestling ring, was facing off against pro wrestlers in the pro wrestling league at the end of October.

• Brad Binder won the Grand Prix in Austria on his birthday. That was his 11th win as a World Champion rider. He also went on to win the Malaysian Moto2 Grand Prix on the same day that the Springboks won the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, making it a good time to be South African.

• Izak Groenewalt het in Januarie 60 geword en het vertel dat dit vir hom nuwe deure oopgemaak het. Hy het die Ligaamsboumeesterskategorie vir deelnemers bo 60 by die Welkom Classic gewen, en later die jaar die International Body Building and Fitness Federation Wêreldkampioenskappe gewen.
