Zama-zama war claims three more lives

Three people were killed and two rushed to hospital after an attack on people believed to be zama-zamas.

“Despite a number of integrated and vigorous district- and station-led O Kae Molao operations to clamp down on illegal mining activities, the so-called zama-zamas still defy laws and kill each other,” a statement from the Kagiso Police’s spokesperson, Captain Solomon Sibiya, read.

They are currently investigating a murder case after three suspected illegal miners were killed at the Soul City informal settlement during the weekend.

The police were called to a shooting at about 6am on Saturday, 9 November. When they arrived, they found the body of a man lying next to a shack.

Two more bodies were found mere metres away from the first. Both victims had stab wounds to their bodies and heads. A few metres further away they found two more men, who were severely injured and also had open stab wounds on their heads and bodies.

The two injured men were immediately rushed to hospital. The Kagiso Police say they are investigating the motive behind the attacks.

“We are appealing to the public to assist us with information that will lead to the arrest of the people involved,” the statement said.
