Police shot at during raid on zama-zamas

A crackdown on illegal miners in the Makhulugama informal settlement quickly lead to shootings.

On Thursday, 29 November, during a 12-hour cluster operation against illegal miners on the West Rand, alleged zama-zamas started shooting and throwing rocks at police officers.

Cluster members reported for duty to address the challenges brought by these zama-zamas in the Makhulugama informal settlement, near West Village, regarding murders and illegal mining.

The area was successfully cordoned off while houses were searched.

“Undocumented persons were arrested, phendukas were confiscated, illegal shebeens closed and liquor confiscated,” said Sergeant Thepiso Mashele, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp Police.

The operation is said to have started in the early morning hours, and police were joined by Mogale City Traffic officers, Community Policing Forum members and other law enforcement agencies from Krugersdorp.

“These kinds of operations need to be consistent to maintain law and order in the Krugersdorp area. It’s about time for people to respect the laws of this country,” said Brigadier Mashao, Station Commander of the Krugersdorp police department.
