Twitter users are speaking up about emotional abuse

Many people think that emotional abuse is not as serious or as harmful as physical abuse. However, this is a complete misconception.

Following on the heels of the viral social media movement, #MeToo, #MaybeHeDoesntHitYou has brought together a great many people speaking up against emotional abuse.

This is not a new movement, however. The hashtag first made its appearance two years ago in May 2016, when writer and artist Zahira Kelly used Twitter to publicly share her experience, and the experience of other women, with emotional abuse.

According to Springtide Resources, some tactics of emotional abuse are as follows:

1. Isolating the victim from friends and family
2. The act of being overly jealous or possessive, constantly accusing partners of having affairs when they are simply talking to someone of the opposite sex
3. Using children to control the victim partner; for example, by threatening to take the children should the victim leave the perpetrator
4. Constantly criticising the victim in terms of their actions, size, appearance, personality or abilities
