Giving false information to the police is considered a serious crime, but that did not stop a 36-year-old man from fabricating a story and trying to convince police that pointing a firearm should be added to the assault case he opened earlier.
The man was arrested shortly after confessing that he had lied about the incident to strengthen his case.

“Officers at the crime office were furious at the man’s confession and immediately put him under arrest and charged him with perjury,” said Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police.
They arrested him immediately as they believed they were being misled and the incident also had a negative impact on “police performance and direction of resources”.
The culprit has appeared briefly in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court and was released, but has to reappear next week. Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, station commander of Kagiso Police, has sent a stern warning, saying “People who think that they can use police to fight their personal battles rather than fight crime, will pay the price of wasting police resources and time”.
