You can pass your driver’s licence first time

The thought of going for your driver's licence test could make you panic – be prepared and remain calm.

Once you have passed your learner’s licence test, you know the next big step is booking your driver’s test – and you can pass the big test first time.

Finding a driving school is important, but with so many schools in and around Krugersdorp, the decision could be difficult. So do your research and speak to driver’s licence holders about the schools they prefer. Ask holders what the instructors of those schools are like and also consider the pass rate of the school. Then you can compare prices as lessons cost approximately R150 to R350 per hour, depending on the school and the code of the licence you are applying for. A driving instructor in Krugersdorp’s CBD who asked not to be named said the number of lessons a learner driver should have before they drive well enough for the test depends on the individual.

“We usually give learner drivers 10 hour-long lessons, and if the instructor feels that the learner is ready for a test, he or she will suggest that the learner should make a booking at the licensing department,” said the instructor.

If you have never driven before, learn the basics, such as starting a car, changing gears and parking, before you book a lesson. If possible, ask a family member or a friend who is a licence holder to help you practice, before you go to a professional instructor. To prepare for your test, practise driving in deserted parking lots and and unused roads and slowly progress to driving in traffic. Do not panic if someone hoots at you, just relax and take instruction from your instructor. When you are comfortable in the car, book your test at the licensing department.

To make a test booking you need your learner’s licence, ID book/ smart card ID, four ID photos and cash. Ask your instructor how much the booking fee is.

Before your test date, your instructor will help you with what you need to know and will be tested on. These essentials include: checking your blind spots; emergency stops; pre-trip inspections; parking, and how to prevent the car from rolling back on a hill. Many experts said learner drivers often fail because they let the car roll back – they forget to pull the handbrake up. If you fail, make another booking immediately, before you forget the rules.

Remain calm and positive before and during the test, and know all the technical aspects of the test and what is expected of you.
