Minors illegally killing animals in the Cradle

They had neither permits nor permission to be hunting in this World Heritage Site.

Conserv Security, working with the Krugersdorp Police, arrested a group of illegal hunters on Thursday, 26 October at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site.

Nine minors, each with several dogs, were hunting small animals in the Cradle when the police, Conserv officers and the Johannesburg and Roodepoort SPCA members caught them hunting on private land with neither permits nor permission. They had caught and killed five hares and a rock monitor.

The SPCA confiscated 26 dogs that will be impounded for seven days to give their rightful owners a chance to pay kennelling fees and collect their dogs, after which the remaining ones will be euthanised.

The rest of their kill of the day was thrown away or hidden when the pursuers were observed.

In a Facebook post, Conserv said, “A strong message is sent to the whole area and hopefully it will pay dividends.”

At least three similar groups are allegedly still operating in the area. The dogs are transported by van to the West Rand region for the purpose of unlawful hunting.

The post continued: “Thanks to all who provided support. We have been keeping an eye on this activity for some time, glad action has been taken.”
