Krugersdorpers still answering Knysna’s call

Krugersdorpers have opened their hearts to Knysna and surrounds and relief efforts are still under way.

Victims of the Knysna fires are starting to pick up the pieces while relief efforts from the West Rand are still going strong.

The team at the News’ office at Caxton Joburg West are still busy packing up donations which will be sent off to the most vulnerable.

Various other collection drives are also underway in Krugersdorp and you still have enough time to make your donations.

Where can I drop off my donation? Here are a few places to keep in mind:

• Caxton Joburg West offices, corner Generaal Pienaar Avenue and Ham Streets, Witpoortjie, until 4.30pm

• Hoërskool Noordheuwel, Bell Drive, Noordheuwel, until 3pm

• Key West Shopping Centre, corner Paardekraal Drive and Viljoen Street, Krugersdorp, information kiosk at Entrance 7 (Food Court) until 6pm

• Donna’s Health and Fitness, 62 Shannon Road, Noordheuwel, between 4.30pm and 8.30pm

Items desperately needed:

• Water

• Non-perishable and canned food

• Dog and cat food

• Blankets

• Toiletries, feminine products and sanitary ware

• Can openers

• Eye drops (for the fire-fighters)

• Baby food and nappies

Latest on the fires:

By late Sunday afternoon, no new fires had been reported in the Knysna area and no evacuations took place during Saturday night.

There were, however, a few fire flare-ups in and around Knysna and the fire near Sedgefield, burning towards Buffalo Bay, still had an active fire line, but it was under control and posed no threat by Sunday afternoon.

In the George area, all fires are contained, however flare-ups were observed at the Hoekwil/ Serpentine Heights and Geelhoutboom fire sites. Fire-fighting crews were busy with operations aimed at containing these fires on Sunday afternoon.

Transportation for goods still needed:

There is an urgent call for transportation companies to come forward and help. With the need growing, transporting the donated goods is a priority. If you are willing to donate your truck to transport a load, please let it be known.
