The Krugersdorp Police have issued an official warning to the community and anyone who visits Krugersdorp to avoid Sivewright Street and to be cautious when halting at intersections nearby.
“People should take note of the issues relating to the Sivewright Street area,” said Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, the Krugersdorp Police spokesperson.
The warning follows the murder of a 34-year-old man on 3 September, a drug and prostitution clean-up operation on 23 February that almost turned ugly and a perjury case, all of which took place in this area.
Motorists are also warned not to pick up people standing at the intersections to give them lifts.
“Motorists can easily fall victim to hijacking, robbery or crime if they do so,” Mashale said.
Police have noticed that community members often fall victim to crime when they give women who stand at street corners near Sivewright Street lifts.
“For some reason, the victim ends up in a room with these women and then gets robbed of valuables.”
The victims are often assaulted before being robbed.
Community members must avoid situations that make them vulnerable.
Further, some people who claim to be victims open false cases at the Krugersdorp Police station. Those who are found to give false information will be charged with perjury.
“Valuable resources are being wasted following up on false cases,” Mashale said.
“Let us work together for a safer community.”
