Nories head girl in critical condition after collision

Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to free her and the other two occupants, who are believed to be her parents.

A man was killed and three other people severely injured in a head-on collision between a Toyota Fortuner and an Audi on the R400 Hartebeespoort road near the Hartbeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory on Saturday, 10 September.

Help24 personnel were first on scene and contacted emergency services immediately.

“On inspection, paramedics found the body of a man in one of the vehicles,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

“Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his multiple, fatal head and chest injuries. Nothing could be done for him and he was declared dead on the scene.”

It is believed the man is an American citizen.

Among the other injured was Ankia Hoffman, head girl of Hoërskool Noordheuwel. She was found in a critical condition, trapped in their vehicle.

Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to free her and the other two occupants, who are believed to be her parents. Paramedics performed numerous advanced life support interventions on all three patients before transporting them to various hospitals.

Ankia allegedly sustained severe head and chest injuries and was rushed to Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital. The man she was travelling with sustained head, leg and chest injuries and was transported to the same hospital by ambulance.

The female patient was airlifted to Netcare Milpark Hospital as she sustained severe head and leg injuries.

Both vehicles were damaged severely.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known as authorities are still investigating the matter.

“Hoërskool Noordheuwel wishes Ankia and her family all the best,” Sonet Guy, spokesperson of Hoërskool Noordheuwel said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
