Mandela Day spirit in Munsieville

Police take 67 minutes from fighting crime to give back to the community.

In the spirit of Mandela Day, a handful of police officers took 67 minutes off from fighting crime to pay a special visit to some Munsieville residents.

Krugersdorp Police Station commander Brigadier Baloyi and other police officers joined the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to spend time with the children and gogos of the community.

At the venue police members hung the colourful items of clothing they had collected onto the fence to resemble a washing line.

Every child and elderly person had the opportunity to browse through the clothing and select two items for themselves to take home.

A group of children sang cheerful songs as the members and stakeholders blessed them with a unique handmade beanie each, as well as a ball to play with. The elderly received fluffy new blankets.

While the elderly were listening to a keynote speaker inside the corrugated iron building on the property, the children tried out their new balls when they played with the brigadier.

A gigantic cake was cut and enjoyed by those attending as the elderly sang Happy Birthday to the late Madiba.

“It was an honour to spend Mandela Day with members of the community and to reach out and spoil those who are in need,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.
