Man allegedly faked his death for R3,6 mil payout

The 'dead man' again took the stand in the Krugersdorp Magistrates' Court on multiple charges.

The man who ‘rose from the dead‘ and recently appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court has charges piling up against him.

The 31-year-old man who faked his own death, but was found alive, well, and living in the Free State, made his third appearance today (18 July).

The accused allegedly faked his own death in order to claim a R3,6 million life insurance policy settlement.

In court this morning, the case was referred to the Regional Court as more charges have been added to the list of crimes in the ongoing investigation being conducted by the State.

During the hearing, the accused indicated to Magistrate Page that he would be abandoning his bail application. It was also made clear that he will be making use of legal aid for his defence.

The State requested that the charges, which already include theft, false identification and two counts of fraud, be brought forward at a different date in order for them to conduct further investigations.

The State initially asked for a three-month postponement in order for the cases to be centralised, and possibly linked to other cases the accused is thought to have been involved in.

Another count the accused will face is that of the murder of the homeless man in Petrus Steyn whose body was found in the burnt-out vehicle in December 2015.

Magistrate Page granted the State a six-week postponement. The accused is set to step back into court on 23 August.
