Traffic came to a standstill after a cash-in-transit vehicle spontaneously burst into flames.

Traffic came to a standstill recently after a cash-in-transit vehicle spontaneously burst into flames on Voortrekker Road.

Members of the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF), accompanied by Mogale City’s Emergency Services rushed to the corner of Voortrekker Road and Soutpansberg Street where the vehicle caught fire at about 1pm one Saturday.

An eyewitness told the News the vehicle was travelling extremely slowly, then came to a total stop. The armed guards in the vehicle jumped out and ran for their lives. The next moment the vehicle was in flames and clouds of black smoke filled the air.

Emergency personnel quickly went to work to extinguish the flames, while curious members of the public were asked to stand back and traffic was redirected.

Shortly after, members of the Krugersdorp Police arrived to help secure the scene as there was still cash in the vehicle.

Both the local and the Gauteng Traffic Departments arrived on the scene and assisted the CPF to close off the roads on both sides. The scene was only cleared up two hours later.

It is believed the fire was caused by a mechanical fault in the vehicle.

“Thank you so much to the community for their understanding and patience while we redirected the traffic and assisted on the scene,” CPF Sector 4’s Public Relations Officer, Rose Menezes, said.
