Dead man’s case postponed

The man who faked his own death faces a hefty fraud case after making a substantial life insurance claim.

The bail application of the ‘dead man’ who appeared in court last week after he was found to be alive and well in the Free State, was opposed by the State this morning.

The 31-year-old male who faked his own death in December 2015 made his second appearance in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court today.

Local police were shocked to learn that the suspect, who allegedly burned to death in his vehicle, was actually alive, and presumably living in the Free State.

“The accused is facing a charge of fraud in that he faked his own demise in a motor-vehicle accident,” West Rand Cluster Police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst said.

There was no mention of the body found in the burnt-out vehicle last year.

The case was briefly heard today and postponed to 18 July when the accused will apply for bail again.

The investigating officer, Captain Ben Booysen, confirmed that this case also involves fraud pertaining to a substantial claim in life insurance.

The accused will remain in custody until his next appearance.
