The Bright One was the right one

It's a house bought in blind faith, paid for by the community.

Blood, sweat and tears and a lot of praying proved that The Bright One was really the right one.

After months of praying, fundraising and hard work, Melodie van Brakel and her team at The Cradle of Hope were able to purchase the house better known as The Bright One, at 40 Nellie Street .

The amount needed to pay for the house by the end of March was a total of R422 422. Melodie and her team tried with all their might to raise enough funds, but just could not reach the mark. Melodie did not give up, however, and the symbolic meaning of the number 422, which is ‘covenant of love’, inspired her to try again.

By the end of April and with the help of the community, Melodie was able to buy the house which will become an extension of their House of Restoration located around the corner from the first Cradle house.

The Bright One will enable The Cradle of Hope to help an additional 30 women in need.

“The money for the house came solely from the community. It is wonderful that the community has joined hands to help.” A number of churches also came on board with donations, and made the purchase of the house possible.

The girls have loads more fundraising and work on their plates as the cost of the upgrade, or rather the clean-up and fixing, of the house is estimated at a whopping R300 000. This includes electrical fencing, tiling, rewiring the whole house, replacing the roof and painting the house inside and out.

“The security of the property is most important as the house is a safe haven for abused women.”

After the refurbishment, the house will need to be equipped for 30 people. This means finding beds, other furniture, appliances, cutlery and other household goods.

“The road to success is always under construction. Every day that a woman and her child sleep in a warm bed and eat healthy food at our House of Restoration is a success story to us. Be the difference you want to see,” Melodie said.
