Police appealing for info in mall heist

A white Merc was involved in the Key West Shopping Centre shooting incident over the weekend.

Krugersdorp Police are investigating a case of armed robbery that followed after the shooting of a security guard at Key West Shopping Centre on Saturday morning.

A cash-in-transit security guard and his colleague were at the mall to load money at an ATM. They returned to the vehicle parked at entrance 3 before 9am on 14 May.

“While opening the door of the vehicle they were accosted by three unknown armed suspects wearing balaclavas. The suspects disarmed the security officers of their firearms and took an undisclosed amount of cash from inside the vehicle,” Krugersdorp Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.

The suspects fled the scene, only after shooting one of the guards in the leg. They fled in different getaway vehicles and not a Toyota Corolla as previously reported.

Shoppers and staff ran in all directions after shots were being fired at the entrance.

News journalist Marizka Coetzer was in the mall at the time of the shooting. Arriving at the scene, Coetzer saw the 43-year-old security guard who was shot in his leg while curious bystanders crowded around.

Shortly thereafter members of the Sector 3 and 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) arrived followed by EPR response and later the police arrived.

Paramedics from ER24 treated the security guard before taking him to hospital for further medical treatment.

It is believed the security guard was discharged from hospital on the same day.

“The suspects were allegedly travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz, without any number plates, and a silver-grey BMW with registration number DC 51XP GP. We urge the community to help with any information that might assist in tracing and arrest of the suspects involved.”
