A woman was involved in what is believed to be an alleged attempted kidnapping incident in Down Street, Kenmare this afternoon (23 March) after 1pm.
The News learned that three men approached a woman as she climbed out of her vehicle to meet her husband at a nearby coffee shop. They then cornered her and dragged her into their car. The News was told that nearby witnesses heard frantic screams as she was dragged, pepper sprayed and held at gunpoint after consequently being forced into a dark blue Mercedes-Benz. Bystanders, after hearing her screams, ran after the car with the woman inside.
After driving for a few metres and stripping her of her valuables, the woman was then allegedly thrown out of the vehicle and ran over.
A car guard who witnessed the incident, said the Mercedes drove behind the woman and as soon as she was alone outside of her car, they attacked her.
“I have also seen this car here before,” he said.
Paramedics, police and Sector 8’s Community Policing Forum members were on the scene.
The News contacted police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, for comment on the matter.
The woman has been taken to hospital by paramedics after sustaining serious injuries from being run over by the suspects’ car.
In a separate, but similar incident, a woman was shot at in Dromore Street in Kenmare on 10 March as she parked her vehicle in a driveway, police said.
The News reported that it was first thought that the incident was an attempted hijacking but police believe it was an armed robbery and attempted murder.The woman was allegedly pulled out of her car and into the suspects’ car and she was later found in another street. An eight-year-old boy, the victim’s grandson, was also in her car, but he was found unharmed.
On 15 March, a woman, said to be pregnant, was also hijacked at around 11am on Robert Broom Drive. She was unharmed, but her valuables were taken.
