KHS water drive fills truckloads

Operation Hydrate still continued through local schools.

Nearly two months after Krugersdorp helped collect water for drought-stricken areas in the Free State and North West provinces, Krugersdorp High School (KHS) was still at it.

On Monday, 11 January, KHS was contacted by a Noordheuwel resident, Samantha van Zyl, who took it upon herself to encourage schools in the area to support the water collection initiated by Operation Hydrate.

Operation Hydrate still distributes water to drought-stricken areas in South Africa. According to eNCA, Operation Hydrate on Saturday, 20 February, delivered over 100 000 litres of water to the community of Modimolle.

KHS pupils collected three truckloads of water. Dash Building and Hardware Centre Roodepoort collected the water at the school on 3 February.

Lauren Jooste-Coetsee, the school’s marketing manager, is proud of the KHS community for “making such a difference in the lives of those being affected by the drought”.

Four parents also donated R6 000 to buy bottled water.

But the initiative sparked projects all over Krugersdorp with many schools like Monument High School and Silverfields Primary School starting their own water drives.

Annemique Janse van Vuuren, along with her parents and Alma Mater Academy, came up with the #almawater2016 project with the goal of collecting 20 000 litres of water by 20 February. The project was also a success.
