R150K spent on boxes is ‘not cool’

Local councillor challenges the municipality after a ridiculous amount of money was spent on cooler boxes.

A Freedom Front Plus councillor has become very suspicious after the municipality purchased items for triple the value with no explanation.

“With the recent heat wave it seems Mogale City went overboard when they purchased three portable fridge/ freezer cooler boxes,” Amanda de Lange from the Freedom Front Plus said.

De Lange says the three cooler boxes were purchased for the Mogale City Water Works Department for R150 000 but it could not be establish what the intended purpose of these expensive cooler boxes are.

The tender of R50 000 per cooler box was approved by the Municipal Manager and De Lange managed to procure the photo and description of the three boxes that were supplied by a local businessman from Kagiso.

“I went to all the suppliers of these cooler boxes but could not find a single one whose prices were even remotely close to these three. I will not rest until the matter is resolved,” she said.

Apparently not even laboratories or organ donation organisations could confirm their equipment to be this expensive.

She requested the matter be referred back for investigation and a written report be made available with regards to the expensive cooler boxes.

“Apart from the increasing water losses, the millions of rands wasted on the municipal billing system, this is one of many queries for fruitless and wasteful expenditure that makes me question the ‘clean audit’ awarded to Mogale City by the Auditor General at the end of last year.”

According to De Lange the Freedom Front Plus will not seize to fight irregular expenditure of local government.

“I will not stop fighting for the best interest of the tax payers and the constituents of the Freedom Front Plus,” she said.
