Another illegal miner arrested

More illegal miners were found digging in old mines.

Another illegal miner was arrested by MSR Security in Magaliesburg with others, alleged illegal minors, still on the run.

On Friday (22 January) morning, a 43-year-old man from the East Rand was arrested in Magaliesburg for mining illegally.

“The suspect was apprehended by members of the security company who then handed him over for detention,” police spokesperson, Constable Rebecca Phithi, said in a press release.

The suspect was found with mining equipment used to dig out gold dust.

“The suspect alleged that he was not alone inside the mine and that the other suspects fled,” she said.

Upon further investigation, police learned that the suspect along with the others, who had allegedly fled, came from different areas to meet at the mine.

The suspect will appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court today (25 January) facing a charge of illegal mining. The News reported in October last year that 16 illegal miners were found by the same security company.

Richard van der Walt, the operations manager from MSR Security, said he has reaction officers who regularly patrol the mining area.
