Possible crime hot spot emerging?

It seems that elderly residents are also being targeted.

Is Mindalore and Lewisham becoming a serious crime hotspot?

The News recently reported about an elderly man who shot warning shots at intruders who started to throw him with concrete slabs. Days later Piet Lourens contacted the News about other incidents in the area.

In Lewisham, two elderly men were cornered in their homes and burgled.

“One of my neighbours got hijacked as he wanted to drive off,” Piet said.

The News spoke to police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale from Krugersdorp police station, about a possible trend in Mindalore and Lewisham.

“We do have different crimes in those areas. A recent incident had police investigating a robbery in Mindalore,” she said.

On 6 January a 19-year-old victim was robbed while sitting in his car and listening to music.

“It is alleged that the armed suspect demanded the car keys and it was handed over. The suspect searched the victims and couldn’t find anything. The suspect then drove off with the vehicle,” Mashale added.

The vehicle was later recovered in Soweto but the suspects are still at large.

“We want to urge the community to be safe at all times,” she said.

And police are clearly warning the community. As you drive down Station Street in Lewisham, the “crime hot spot” boards fastened to the street poles send a loud enough message.

If you have any information about illegal activities, report it anonymously to the Crime Stop tip off line on 08600 10111 or sms to 32211.

“Remember to mention who did what to whom, when, where, why and how,” Mashale said.
