Police bribed with over R5 000

Yet, these law enforcers still said no.

Nearing the end of 2015, Tarlton police officers made a big decision in aid of law enforcement. They rejected a nearly R5 000 bribe.

“On the morning of 29 December two males aged 29 and 38 years were not only arrested for bribery, but also for theft and possession of stolen diesel,” police spokesperson, Constable Lucky Matome, said

It is alleged that a 38-year-old driver of a fuel logistics truck was travelling from Rustenburg on his way to Centurion when he stopped at a Tarlton filling station and sold about 300 litres of diesel.

“The police received an anonymous tip off about these suspicious activities,” Matome said.

The driver of the truck, upon the police’s arrival, decided to offer a R1 000 bribe. But the police did not deter and instead warned the suspect that what he is trying to do is illegal.

“The warning fell on deaf ears. The owner of the filling station then offered the members a further R4 320 for them to turn a blind eye.”

“The driver could not prove that his actions were legal and he was arrested and charged with theft and bribery, while the owner was charged with possession of suspected stolen diesel and bribery,” Matome added.

The police officers could have turned a blind eye, but Matome said they still take great pride in their duties as police officers.

The Station Commander of Tarlton police, Lieutenant Colonel Christina Tsoaedi, said that no amount of money will deter her colleagues from doing their work.

Both suspects are expected to appear before the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
