Child’s body found 500 metres from grandparents’ home

Police gave an in-depth explanation of how and where they found the body of five-year-old, Matthew Ryan Olivier.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police said, “Police searched the area since the report of the disappearance was received.”

Ernst added that members of the K9 unit, off road search and rescue, mountain rescue as well as CPF members from as far as Honeydew and Johannesburg assisted in the search.

On the day the child was found, approximately 300 volunteers including members of the DA Randfontein and police converged at 11am to start searching again.

At 2pm the body of the child was found approximately 500 metres from his grandparents’ home in a trench filled with water.

Ernst said the body was taken to the Roodepoort Mortuary and an inquest is being investigated at the Randfontein police station.

“Randfontein Station Commander, Brigadier Manamela conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“He also would like to applaud the community of Randfontein, Roodepoort, Krugersdorp, Hekpoort, Magaliesburg, Benoni and all NGOs that assisted in the search throughout the three days,” said Ernst.
