Elite tennis ready for new year

Junior tennis popularity grows with a new league kicking off in the new year.

The junior tennis league in Krugersdorp will kick off the new year on an exciting note.

The Western District tennis trials were held in November, attracting tennis players from as far west as Fochville and Westonaria, but also players from Florida.

The juniors played in their respective age groups, ranging from under 10 to under 18.

“This is a big step forward towards uplifting junior tennis and giving our top junior players exposure to high level competition,” Marcel Grobbelaar, chairperson for Gauteng West D2 Schools, said.

Excitement filled the air while players battled it out on the tennis courts.

“We thank KHS, Hoërskool Monument and Noordheuwel’s tennis clubs for supporting junior tennis and making their tennis facilities available to these players.”

Six players in each age group were selected during the trails.

The aspiring tennis players qualified for the elite team, which will compete against other regions during 2016 tennis season.
