Crime given the boot this festive season

Warning signs of crime hotspots to be put up around Krugersdorp for the upcoming festive season.

Over the past few months reported crime incidents have hiked, causing local CPF and police to sharpen their crime prevention and law enforcement strategies.

“The CPF is satisfied that the police is doing their utmost to fulfill their mandate to keep Krugersdorp safe, regardless of a serious lack of human and logistic resources, which we trust will be rectified in 2016,” Gert Jonker, Krugersdorp CPF executive committee chairperson said.

The CPF, as mandated representatives of the Krugersdorp community, has a civilian oversight role to play in terms of the South African Police Service Amendment Act and the Constitution.

Based on that mandate, the CPF actively works with police and other law-enforcement role players to make Krugersdorp safer for those living and working in the area.

The Krugersdorp CPF partnered with police and Mogale City Public Safety along with numerous security companies such as Dowry, Thompsons Security and EPR to launch a crime-awareness initiative in crime hotspots across Krugersdorp.

With the police’s help, 10 areas were identified where crime is unacceptably high. The CPF will put up large posters warning the community to be careful when enter these crime hotspots.

These posters will stay up until the end of February, after which the initiative will be re-evaluated.

“The CPF trusts that residents of Krugersdorp will be safe over the festive season. CPF prays for the safety of all law-enforcement officers, emergency service officials and CPF volunteer patrollers who will work over the festive season to keep the community safe,” Jonker said.

Police advise residents to secure their homes by means of extra security, which includes ensuring that all doors are locked at all times and windows are closed when you are not at home.

If you leave your home, inform your family/ neighbours of where you intend to go, what time you expect to return and the route you will be taking, especially if you reside in a rural area.

Residents are urged not to leave their vehicles unlocked, even if you think you will be away for only a minute as opportunists could strike at any moment.

It is also import to report suspicious behaviour and information to the police to help them combat crime in this time.
