Water stream down roads while taps run dry

Is Mogale City losing their own war on leaks?

While taps are still running dry in parts of Krugersdorp, water is currently leaking from a manhole in Kenmare and everyone is asking; who is going to fix it?

After the News was asked by readers about a constant stream of water running down Voortrekker Road near Burger Box, it was decided to investigate and a municipal drain was found to be was overflowing in Clew Street in Kenmare.

The water is running down the road, through a storm drain. But it was not clear where this water which is flowing down Voortrekker Road, is coming from. Many residents said they have seen this stream of water running for more than a week.

Meanwhile, residents in parts of Krugersdorp are without water for the fourth consecutive day today (24 November) after a pipe initially burst on Thursday night (19 November) after being struck by lightning. Nkosana Zali, Mogale City Municipality’s spokesperson, told the News on Monday (23 November) afternoon at around 4.30pm, the pipe, that continually burst at different parts, was fixed and people could expect to have water again. Yet, in Krugersdorp North, Rant-en-Dal and Dan Pienaarville, dry taps were again the cause of concern for many homeowners.

A reader contacted the News yesterday, asking why the water tank in Krugersdrop North was empty.

“I need water to flush my toilets,” she said.

“But luckily I have friends who have water, so my family of four and I can bath at their house.”

Many residents have resorted to help from friends and family, as life without water became a bit difficult.

But what about the war on leaks?

In Clew Street, water leaked out of a drain on the side of the road. It is not clear whether this water is the same water running down Voortrekker Road.

After making a few phone calls, the News learned that the Department of Water and Waste Water was indeed informed of the leakage in Clew Street. The News then reported the matter again, hoping it will be fixed soon.

DA councillor Annette Fourie, also a member of the Mogale City Infrastructure Portfolio, said she was already aware of, and reported two leakages in the area close to Clew Street.

“Rand Water informed me there was a problem with a submersible pump that needed to be fixed by Mogale City. I have notified Mogale City about the water that has been running down Voortrekker Road due to this issue,” she said.

Annette also spoke about another leak on the Krugersdorp Bowling Club grounds itself. The leakage has cause the ground to sink in already.

“The club members and I have both reported the problem to Mogale City.

According to her, these issues remain unresolved and the water is still leaking.

“I know that when you lease municipal ground, all problems that occur on that ground, is the lessee’s responsibility to fix,” she explained.

It is not clear whether all three leakages are related, as the News was unable to reach Rand Water for comment.
