[CCTV] Bogus customer steals cellphone

Two suspects are seen on CCTV footage stealing a cellphone from behind a counter at a spares shop in Krugersdorp's CBD.

The News obtained CCTV footage showing how a bogus customer stole a staff member’s cellphone from underneath a counter at a spares shop in broad daylight.

The footage shows two suspects, one in a blue shirt and the other in a white button shirt, carefully peeking over the counter a number of times while another sales person is busy with a customer.

The two suspects are then seen switching places moments before the suspect with the blue shirt leans over and snatches a cellphone from behind the counter.

The sales person told the News that he did not even notice his cellphone was missing until his wife called the land line to ask why his phone was off.

When they had a look at the footage they saw the two bogus customers working together to steal the phone.

The sales person also suggested that the suspect may have spotted his cellphone through the window which is covered with stickers on the side.

He explained that if you stand close to the window, a person can get a glimpse into the shop and see what is going on behind the counter.

“We are urging the community to be vigilant this festive season and not just simply trust strangers. Opportunists seek easy targets and can strike at any given moment. Business owners are also warned to take extra precaution as they tend to work in groups,” Krugersdorp police spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, said.
