Man builds shack next to home he was kicked from

Johannes had nowhere to go, so he built a shack right next to the house he recently was kicked from.

When Johannes van de Reede was kicked out of his home last week on Thursday he decided to build a shack next to the house.

“I have nowhere else to go,” he explained to the Sector 5 Community Policing Forum members, Department of Social Services staff and the News.

Everyone seemed rather interested in his activities, especially his neighbour, who told the News that since he had been kicked out, she brought him tea and some food every day.

Last night (5 October) Johannes’ ex-partner who, according to him, recently left him for her ex-husband, forced him to vacate his shack.

“I moved all my things across the road to the old police sport grounds [next to the Harlequins Rugby Club grounds], and slept there last night,” he said.

At noon today, Sector 5 members told him to vacate the property before 3pm. “If you decide to squat here, more will come,” they told him.

Johannes replied he was willing to move, but he neither had anywhere else to go nor did he have any transport to move.

“My mother passed away a few years ago, and my father lives in Burgershoop’s cemetery,” he explained.

The CPF members offered to help Johannes move to Munsieville this afternoon at 3pm.

Department of Social Services staff also were present this morning and said they would return at 3pm.

Democratic Alliance ward councillor Jakkie Naudé joined in and said Johannes has set up camp illegally and he must be removed.

As an alternative Johannes has been offered a room in town, in turn for watching cars at night. The CPF is helping him move into the room.

“I always helped her where I could. Then one day I found myself on the street, kicked out by her and her ex-husband,” Johannes concluded.

His ex-partner contacted the News and explained that she did indeed ask, and not force, him to leave her home for personal reasons.

“But not because of my ex-husband,” she said.
