Dancing with cancer survivors

Local dance school to create awareness for cancer in a spectacular showcase with survivors.

A local dance school will host an event in aid of the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and to celebrate cancer survivors.

Veronica Luksich, area developer for Fred Astaire South Africa and Chantel van Zijl from Fred Astaire Krugersdorp met up with the News to talk about their upcoming dance event, which will feature cancer survivors as the stars of the night.

The event will be a showcase evening with loads of glitz and glamour similar to what is seen on Strictly Come Dancing or Dancing with the Stars but will feature cancer survivors partnered with professional dancers.

This event is the first of its kind in South Africa and funds raised will be donated to Cansa.

After meeting a cancer survivor a year and half ago, Veronica was inspired to make a difference in someone’s life and teamed up the Fred Astair franchisees to host the event.

“It was frightening to me that this woman I met had lost a breast, underwent chemo and lost her hair within six months,” Veronica explained.

Cancer survivors will be allocated to different studios that are partaking in the event and be taught a dance routine. On the night they will wear dancing costumes and makeup and will be honoured as the stars of the night.

“We want to make each participant feel like a dancing queen and put the spotlight on them for the night and in this way create awareness for cancer,” Chantel said.

The event is scheduled for October, which also is breast cancer awareness month, and will be held at Oakfield Farm.
