Staff members tell of racist comments and threats by the constable who was caught stealing at a shop in Cradlestone Mall.

Caught by vigilant staff members, the two cops aged 42 and 29, tried to steal a headphone set worth R1 000 and a USB modem worth R149.

A shop assistant, Amanda Chili told the News the two women arrived in the store at around 10am on 19 August.

The one, a warrant officer who inquired about the different sizes of the USB modems, was later found with one in her possession while the constable was caught putting headphones into the left-side bottom pocket of her trousers.

Chili said the warrant officer kept trying to distract the staff members with different queries about products and at one point asked for a pen and paper while the constable was stationed at the turntable where the phones are displayed.

“The fact that the constable kept standing at the table made me very suspicious,” Chili explained.

At some point Chili noticed a box of headphones had disappeared from the display, and decided to tell her colleagues in Zulu to keep an eye on the two who were acting very strangely.

The two police officers were arrested for shoplifting.

At first when the constable was asked what she was doing, she simply said she was waiting for her friend.

She quickly took the headset out of her pocket and threw it in the cabinet where she already disposed of the box.

The constable immediately said, “I am doing nothing, I am not stealing”.

“After we confronted her she started swearing at us and kept telling us that she is a police woman and what are we trying to accuse her of?” Chili explained.

Interestingly enough, Chili further stated the constable said she is going to call her boyfriend, who is also a police officer, and later her boss.

The News later learned that the constable is allegedly affiliated with a station commander from within the Krugersdorp Cluster.

At some point the warrant officer told the staff that they are not allowed to search them as they are in uniform.

As the two women were escorted out of the shop by mall security, the door’s alarms went off as soon as the warrant officer went through the sensors.

They were both taken to the security control room, along with two of the witnesses.

Another shop assistant Danisile Xulu expressed her disgust in the police women and told the News about the racist comments made by the constable.

“F@#k you black people. You are always making a noise. I am coming back for you, I will get you,” the constable shouted at the staff who caught her.

Xulu also confirmed that the constable boasted that her boyfriend is also in the police.

“When we realised they were stealing we weren’t scared of them anymore. It is disgusting how they are taking advantage of their uniforms,” she concluded.

Juddy Maluzhani, the shop technician, confirmed the constable started threatening and insulting them.

The Muldersdrift police were called to the shop to take statements from the staff members while other police officers, two in uniforms and one in casual wear, tried to interfere with the scene.

Maluzhani said one officer tried to convince them to drop the charges and kept saying the matter can be sorted out outside of court.

“It is up to you. We can delay this until your manager arrives. We are willing to pay, we can go double. Or you can proceed with the statement,” the officer kept saying.

The owner of the shop refused to accept the plea from the officer and proceeded with their statements after personally taking his staff members to the police station.

Captain Doniah Mothutsane, SAPS Provincial Spokesperson released the following statement:

“The Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS, Lieutenant General L Mothiba, and the entire management are concerned about the escalation of members’ misconducts following the arrest of two police members yesterday at Cradlestone Mall for shoplifting at a cell phone shop. The two police officers who are stationed at Krugersdorp were released on bail faces charges of shoplifting. These conducts will not be tolerated as it hinders the reputation of the SAPS.”
