Boy’s wound worsening

Five weeks after his operation at Leratong Hospital, his wound has now become worse.

Five weeks later, and 10-year-old Zander Oosthuizen’s appendix wound is getting worse.

Tanya Oosthuizen, Zander’s mother and caretaker since his operation at Leratong Hospital, told the News she is becoming more and more concerned about her son’s wound and the time it is taking to heal.

The News reported on Zander’s bad experience at Leratong Hospital when he had his appendix removed.

“He has been on antibiotics since the beginning, but his wound is taking a very long time to heal because it is still infected,” she said.

Tanya received a phone call from Leratong Hospital’s complaints department where they told her the correct procedure was indeed not followed.

“They said there was no proper communication between the staff and myself and that there will be a disciplinary hearing soon.”

Dr Monique Smit from Krugersdorp said that normally an appendix wound heals in about two weeks. But the correct measures should be taken when aiding the healing wound.

“The wound should always be kept clean and dry and should be handled after you washed your hands.”

Dr Smit added that one must remain in bed as much as possible.

Tanya’s 12-year-old daughter has been admitted to Helen Jospeh Hospital last night for an operation as well.

“The staff and nurses at Helen Jospeh Hospital have treated us kindly and fairly. Why can’t Leratong do the same?”

Leratong’s media liaison was approached for comment for the umpteenth time, yet they still have not responded.
