[PHOTOS] Monnas not just about rugby – they paint too

Monnas' art pupils make their teacher proud with their diverse collection of paintings.

Young and passionate – Monnas’ art pupils are part of South Africa’s upcoming artists.

Monument High School’s Grade 11 and matric art pupils plan to continue with their passion well into the future.

Nicole Ras wants to become an architect, Joshua Berry plans to be an Industrial Designer and Angelica Fourie is going to become a renowned animation artist. Helene Vermaak, an artist and Monnas’ art teacher for the past three years, says there is a lot of hidden talent in her classroom.

“The students are extremely hard working and plan to make a career out of their passion. It really is more than just pretty pictures or a hobby.”

By giving the young artists a free space to be creative, a diverse range of artworks come forth.

“Angelica likes to create odd images that seems confusing, yet it’s so beautiful,” Helene said.

Joshua, who comes from an artistic family, painted a series of Harry Potter inspired paintings for the Pop Art, art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, project they were given.

“I like the technical side of life as well, so industrial design will still be creative and technical enough as a career.”

Helene believes all her students will one day be successful artists in their own way. Today you can be both an artist and successful,” she added.
