Amid community outcry, Leratong is adding 42 beds

Leratong Hospital is adding 42 beds to its overcrowded medical department.

Leratong Hospital recently added 42 beds to their medical department.

“This will go a long way in providing a much-needed relief to the patients, staff and management of Leratong. The institution’s Internal Medicine Department has been overstretched for some time, accommodating patients far above capacity,” said Fikile Oyekanmi, head communication officer of Leratong Hospital.

Apart from reducing overcrowding, this addition is expected to improve patient care.

According to Oyekanmi, patients sometimes were nursed on stretchers and their dignity needed to be maintained. Overworked staff also will benefit from the new additions.

Meanwhile, Krugersdorp residents are still in shock over the death of a 27-year-old mother and her unborn baby at Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital and the 10-year-old boy who became more ill after being treated at Leratong Hospital.

The News recently conducted a survey on our Facebook page and approached residents at the Anthos Shopping Centre to determine how Krugersdorpers feel about public hospitals.

Like many others, Jacques du Plooy said he is very unhappy about public hospital service.

“I rather would go to the vet than to a public hospital.”

Another comment expressed the lack of faith people have in state hospitals.

“These hospitals are in a sorry state. The elderly are not treated with respect and there is never enough clean linen for the beds,” Cathy Reinecke said.
