Their goal was to fill a 67 metre long clothing rail in a month – they doubled it.
Not only was the entire clothing rail filled with jackets, pants, shirts and jerseys, but 19 additional trolleys were also filled to the brim with shoes, blankets, bags and even underwear.
The initiative started at the beginning of July because of the need Cradlestone’s center management saw in the community for clothing, especially children’s clothing. Armand du Plessis, the Krugersdorp’s own Mr South Africa, also joined the drive when he donated a trolley full of new children’s clothing.
According to the mall’s marketing manager, Najla Richardson, there was a constant flow of donations by shoppers throughout the month. Even till the end more bags came in from people who needed to clear their closets. Myra Coetzer was one of them.
“I saw the campaign was running and I thought of all the clothes that I never wear. Someone else will appreciate it much more,” Myra said.
“With every hanger, a message of hope was attached where the donor could write an inspiring message to the receiver of the clothing or pair of shoes,” Najla explained.
Carey Christie, co-marketing manager, laughed at the minor problems they had to face throughout the month.
“We had to tell a few people who browsed the rail and wanted to buy the clothes that it was not for sale, but for charity.”
On Friday, 7 August, the management team will donate the heaps and heaps of attire to different charity organisations in the West Rand.
