Police vehicle and scooter collide

Two were injured when a scooter and a police vehicle collided in Lewisham late yesterday afternoon.

Afternoon traffic came to a halt yesterday, 6 August, when a scooter and a police vehicle collided on the corner of Main Reef Road and Station Street.

Upon seeing scooter parts scattered across the road, motorists and motorcyclists all slowed down, concerned about the state of the rider.

People stood next to the wrecked scooter, wondering if the driver was alright.

The police vehicle is part of the West Rand Flying Squad and was driving along Main Reef towards the CBD. The driver of the scooter, driving in the opposite direction, made a right turn into Station Street when the police vehicle crashed into him.

Members of the West Rand Flying Squad and Mogale City Public Safety were on scene when the News arrived where the scooter laid in pieces and the police vehicle was dented on its front left side.

According to a bystander, the young man who was driving the scooter sustained injuries, but he is recovering.

The West Rand Flying Squad vehicle’s front left side was dented because of the impact.

ER24 took the driver of the scooter to a nearby hospital and the driver of the police vehicle was tended to by a Netcare 911 paramedic, yet sustained no serious injuries.

Another bystander, who is also a motorcycle driver, said he felt ice cold when he saw the scooter in pieces next to the road.

“When you ride a scooter or motorcycle, you need to be extra careful. I’m just glad the young man is alive.”
