South Africa’s spring flowers in all their abundance will be the stars of this year’s Spring Festival at Garden World.
Nature’s Bounty is this year’s theme, as the 17 designer gardens showcase the wealth of indigenous plants and flowers, tying in with this year’s Kirstenbosch South Africa Chelsea Exhibit entitled South Africa in Bloom; 40 years at the Chelsea Flower Show.
The Chelsea exhibit will include a display of Plants South Africa Gave the World and a named flower specimen display. For local gardeners, the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden created a show garden (not just a display), which highlights original ways to use indigenous plants in city gardens.
Herb Morning
A festival highlight will be a herb morning on 22 August presented by herb authority Margaret Roberts and her daughter Sandy on Teas for Health and Vitality, who have just published a book on the subject.
They will focus on teas that build health, provide herb teas to taste and partner them with eats that aid memory, weight, arthritis, gouts, digestion and many more common ailments. Their new book, Herb Tea, signed by Margaret and Sandy, will be available.
Other annual attractions at the festival, which will run until 30 August, are the school gardens, children’s box gardens, magnificent floral exhibits of the Gauteng Flora Union and Interflora, and educational exhibits by Rand Water’s Water Wise, North West University and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.
Garden World recently received a Gold Award from the South African Nursery Association and is situated on Beyers Naudé Drive in Muldersdrift.
