67 minutes of serving whatever they can

Two passionate moms make a difference in the community by involving local pageant title holders.

Four years ago, before National Mandela Day was introduced, two moms wanted to make a difference on Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Due to the cold winter, Sharon Turner and Valma Laubscher wanted to serve soup to the less fortunate for 67 minutes on the 18 July every year.

“Our feeling is, if it is to be, it is up to me,” said Sharon Turner, who works hand-in-hand with her friend Valma.

Each year a new venue is selected and things just fall into place as people pitch in and help to make it happen.

“We thank all who support us every year. This year we chose President Hyper in Krugersdorp as the venue and got to work. For the past two years we also collected 67 of anything, which later was donated to The Cradle of Hope, a shelter for abused women with children, together with all the left-over soup.”

Sharon said it is amazing to see that each year the amount of goods collected grows and the volunteers increase.

“We work with many pageant title holders, including Miss Universe Bikini Chante van Wyk who uses her title to give back to the community.”

The goods were delivered at the Cradle of Hope that same afternoon with the help of Chante and her family.

Examples of the collected items include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, socks, onesies, nappies, toilet paper, Sunbakes donated bread, T-shirts, jeans and much more.

“We take in anything donated! See you again somewhere, same date, same time doing our community thing,” she concluded.
