N14 protesters damage police vehicle

An early morning protest on the N14 is over, but police are still monitoring the area.

Early morning traffic came to a halt when residents of Video Center Informal Settlement protested on the N14 highway between Beyers Naude and Malibongwe Drive.

The protesters burned tyres and held up traffic on the N14 next to the informal settlement.

Police confronted the protesters, resulting in one police vehicle being damaged by the protesters at around 7am. Hitler Ngwenya, Muldersdrift Police spokesperson, confirmed the road was cleared not long after the police vehicle was damaged. A case of damage to state property has been opened, but no arrests have been made yet.

A resident of Muldersdrift informed the News that the protests have been going on for a while.

“About 500 protesters occupied private property last week. The owner was not there,” the resident said.

It is not yet clear what the protesters were protesting against.
