Cigarette van hijacking suspects caught

Three of the five suspects are expected to make a brief appearance in court tomorrow.

Three suspects have been arrested in Kagiso yesterday 7 July after a van transporting cigarettes was hijacked in Randfontein minutes before.

It is alleged that five armed robbers approaced the delivery personnel when they stopped at a shop in Randfontein. Information indicates the suspects were driving in a silver Audi where they forced the one delivery person into the boot of the Audi before taking the delivery vehicle.

Captain Appel Ernst, a police spokesperson said the incident was reported immediately to the Randfontein Police.

“Within 10 minutes after the incident, the hijacked vehicle and thr delivery person was found in Robina Avenue, Greenhills, where it was dumped. This is approximately 2km away from where the crime happened.”

She said the cargo of the vehicle was already removed.

“Information was received that the cargo was transferred to another light delivery vehicle before it sped away in the direction of Kagiso.”

Members from the Krugersdorp Cluster Trio task team responded immediately and followed all leads.

Ernst said the members were able to make three arrests, recovered most of the robbed cargo and also confiscated a light delivery vehicle that was reported stolen in Kagiso about three months ago.

Two suspects and the silver Audi is still at large. The three suspects are expected to make a brief appearance in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court tomorrow 9 July on charges of being in possession of stolen property and for hikacking of a vehicle.

The Cluster Commander, Maj General Mateisi applauded all the members who made this success possible.
