House robbers receive 10 years

Young house robbers were convicted after assaulting an elderly woman from Krugersdorp North.

Two teenagers were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment following a house robbery in Krugersdorp North last year.

Earlier in June, Thokozani Makutulela, 18, along with his accomplice and friend, Sfiso Zwane, 19, were convicted of house robbery with an additional charge of grievous bodily assault in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.

“An elderly female became the victim of a house robbery at her Krugersdorp North home when two suspects jumped her wall and overpowered her,” Krugersdorp Police Station spokesperson, Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale said.

The incident took place on 28 February 2014 at midday when she was attacked by the suspects who forced her inside her house.

It is alleged the suspects demanded money and jewellery from her and threatened to kill her if they didn’t find what they were looking for.

“The two suspects tied her hands and took her into a room. They ransacked the house and fled the scene. The police were alerted after her neighbour had heard her cries for help. The neighbour, who later spotted the young men who fitted the description of the suspects, called the police.”

The suspects who were both 17 at the time of the incident were arrested at the Krugersdorp taxi rank, where they were found in possession of the stolen property.

“Detective Constable Glen Mothupi from the Krugersdorp detective branch worked very hard and put in many hours during his investigation by gathering enough evidence and taking witness statements leading to secure a successful conviction. Krugersdorp Cluster Commander Major General Mateisi appreciates the good work done by the member to secure a good conviction for his case.”
