[PHOTOS; VIDEO] EFF answers West Village’s cry for help

EFF's Gauteng Provincial spokesperson, Patrick Sindane, explained that West Village's problem is because of politics and needs a political solution.

While many celebrated Youth Day, West Village residents awaited the EFF so their woes could be heard.

“We are Krugersdorp’s forgotten community,” said John Barnardt, West Village’s community leader.

On Tuesday afternoon Patrick Sindane, Gauteng’s provincial spokesperson for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), paid a visit to the residents of three buildings along Tom Muller Road in West Village.

Barnardt and other West Village residents led Sindane through the gutter many call home.

“We don’t care which political party we deal with, as long as someone helps us. The DA and Mogale City do not want to help us,” Barnardt said.

Sindane was disgusted when he saw in which conditions the people have to live in.

“This is not the life you want for your children. You must fight for a better life,” Sindane told the residents.

He asked the residents, mostly elders over 60 years, whether they had IDs.

The majority did not, owing to reasons such as unavailability of birth certificates or lack of transport or funds.

“If they have IDs, the younger people can apply for jobs and the elders for a pension fund,” Sindane said.

Elsa Beukes, 43, who has a disability that does not allow her to walk on her own, also has no ID.

“If Elsa applies for an ID, she can be afforded a disability grant,” Sindane explained.

After a tour of the buildings, Sindane addressed residents in attendance.

“The EFF does not make empty promises,” he said.

“We will knock on the door of every office until basic services are provided to you,” Sindane told the crowd.

Barnardt told the News that these buildings and other properties along Tom Muller Road are owned by the same company.

The News also learned that these residents do not own or pay rent for the rooms they stay in.

Christo Peyper, DA Caucus leader in Krugersdorp, said only after further investigation they will be able to comment.

No comment was received from Nkosana Zali, Mogale City Local Municipality’s spokesperson, by the time of going to print.
