Dislodged manhole cover causes accident

The infamous Tom Muller Street in West Village is the scene of yet another accident.

A manhole cover not fully intact caused a light motor vehicle accident on Tom Muller Street in West Village.

“A truck drove in front of me, so I could not see the obstacle in the road,” says Divan Gerber, on his way to fetch his child from school.

“The truck drove over it, being high enough to miss it.”

Gerber’s Daihatsu Sirion’s entire engine came loose and the samp cover was knocked off.

The manhole was left opened and a traffic triangle was placed before it to diverge traffic.

He explained that two police vehicles passed him where only the second one stopped.

“The first police vehicle drove on, and the officer only waved back at me as I tried to get his attention.”

When Gerber phoned 10111 and various other emergency and municipality numbers, the phone was either put down or no one answered.

“My mother was in the car with me and she only sustained minor discomfort.”

He said that he will open a case against Mogale City Local Municipality for the damages to his car.

“Road maintenance is clearly not implemented on this road.”

Tom Muller Street is known for its unpainted and unmarked road bumps and poses a risk towards the community.

John Barnard, West Village’s community leader told the News that trucks normally dislodge the cover.

“I am not sure whether they do it purposely or not, because it becomes dislodged every day.”

According to Barnard, West Village falls under Mogale City and is no longer an private estate, therefore they are not responsible for the maintenance of the roads, its markings or its manhole covers.
