Missing 76 year-old found next to fence

A motorist found the missing 76-year-old lying next to the fence after renewing vehicle licence disks.

Terrence ‘Terry’ Chalmers has been found after being reported missing three days ago on Monday 25 May.

Brian Britz, a resident from Witpoortjie who works in Chamdor found the 76-year-old in Delporton – about 4km from where he was last seen – when he renewed the licence disks of the company’s vehicles, today 27 May just before noon.

“I was driving from the traffic licensing department when I saw a person lying next to the fence of the Krugersdorp Game Reserve. I really thought he was dead,” Britz said.

Britz said he parked his car and walked to the man, who he then realised is still alive.

“He was covered in blood. The shoes and watch he was wearing was already an indication to me that he must be cared for.”

He helped Chalmers, who was at this time very weak and had difficulty walking, back to his car.

“I am just thankful that he was still able to speak and able to provide me with his address to take him back home, otherwise I would have taken him directly to hospital,” Britz said.

Colonel Verna van Staden who works with the missing persons files at the Krugersdorp Police Station said she is grateful that Chalmers was found and would like to thank everyone who helped by searching for him.

She added that it is also best to get an armband for elderly people with their addresses on.

“It is a good idea to have something like that in place in the event that a person takes his or her daily walk and get lost. That way people who sees such a person can assist.”
