Truck hijacking attempt foiled

After a botched hijacking attempt, the suspect was there after allegedly assaulted by members of the community.

Kagiso police have arrested an attempted murder suspect in Tshepisong for allegedly shooting and trying to hijack a truck.

Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson said police received a complaint of mob justice where after the police responded swiftly and went to the scene.

“Upon arrival police found one suspect who was assaulted by members of the community. The suspect allegedly belonged to a group of six suspects that tried to rob the truck driver,” Sibiya said.

“Five of his accomplices fled the scene after one of them had fired a shot directed to the truck driver. The truck driver sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body and was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.”

Sibiya said the suspect had sustained injuries to the head, legs and arms and was also taken to hospital in a stable condition.

A case docket of attempted murder was opened at Kagiso Police Station and the suspect will make a brief appearance in court soon.
